As a result of the rise in the water level in the Senegal River, several trees and crops in the northern part of Senegal have been damaged. The country authorities decided to carry out the evacuation of residents located in the flood-risk zone, with the aim of relocating them to safer areas. Additionally, the Senegalese army and civil defense units participated in providing assistance to the population.
The Senegal River Management Authority recently announced the introduction of orange-level warnings due to significant material losses in areas adjacent to the river in Senegal and Mali. The organization warned of high water levels, stable for the last few days, which are equivalent to levels stabilized in 1999.
This year, about four million people have suffered from unprecedented floods in Western and Central Africa. Most affected were Nigeria, Chad, Mali, Guinea, Niger, Cameroon, Ghana, and Liberia, which led to the deaths of hundreds of people and the destruction of vast agricultural areas.
Senegalese authorities have deployed armed forces in the northeastern part of the country to provide help in evacuating residents and organizing field camps in the aftermath of the general floods.
