In Senegal, every time one of the ruling duo appears – the country's president Macky Sall and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, society competes in praising their outfits. Both prefer to dress in clothing inspired by the traditional "bobo," which also incorporates elements of Western fashion.
"Many times clients came to me with a photograph of the president and asked to sew them clothes in a similar style," says a young tailor from the capital Dakar. Clothing designer Khalil Sisse claims that the tastes of these political leaders attract the youth. Such a style, called "contemporary tradition," has been popular for around 10 years.
The President of Senegal prefers what locals call "empty clothing" – a local modification of the classic European suit.
"The style of 'contemporary tradition' blends classic elements to provide greater elegance and comfort in everyday life," explains Ndaye. For their outfits, they incorporate elements of traditional costumes, but shorten them to mid-thigh or knee length, adding a pocket on the chest, giving an official appearance.
Senegalese Makiy Sall, the former president, routinely wore a Western suit, occasionally at special events preferring traditional three-piece attire. Designer Osenu Oseni has been creating clothing for Prime Minister Sonko since 2016.
"It was that 10 years ago Senegalese youth wore traditional clothing only on holidays, but today there is a trend to wear such clothing every day – even in offices, cafes, and even in mosques," emphasizes Ndaye.
